Autohemotherapy?

Have anyone heard before autohemotherapy? Literally it means "use pateint's own blood to treat that patient". Sounds weird right? So do I. During the pratical in hospital when I was helping the nurse, I saw the nurse withdraw about 10ml of blood from the patient's vein on the arm. That time I though the blood is going to be sent for analysis. But shockingly, later the nurse use that blood to inject it on the patient's buttock. I was like, what the heck is this (@_@)?!?!? Later I asked the nurse, she gave me a bombastic term: "autohemotherapy".

A proper definition from answer.com:
Treatment of disease with the patient's own blood, withdrawn by venipuncture and then injected intramuscularly.

On first glance I was quite confused, how can we treat someone by withdraw something from the patient and use it as medication to inject it back to the patient? So later I do some searching on the net and found some informations.

There are physicians said that reintroduction of the blood strengthens a person's immunity, because the body must mount a fresh immune response to the disease-causing substances. Consequently, the technique is often performed to treat chronic immune deficiency, allergies, gout, liver disease, diabetes and rheumatic ailments. The procedure may also boost a person's vitality. Reinjection of blood resets the immune system, causing the disease fighting cells to wake up and other harmful substances that can trigger infections, allergies, rheumatic ailments or other disorders.

The reported beneficial action of autohemotherapy has been attributed to the presence of antigens in the blood which stimulate the production of antibodies when injected into the tissues.

This treatment is kind of cool, and is of low cost ^^. But not all the countries like US accept this method. Just like physiotherapy, mustard plaster and cupping are not widely used in Malaysia.

  3. [Grace] But honestly some people consider it as alternative treatment, just like acupuncture (針灸) and fire cupping (拔罐). Hopefully biotechnology will develop in Malaysia, cause I heard that the government put it in RMK9. Anyway thanks for visiting.

[Jia Hui] Sorry wrong answer, studying in a small city called Volgograd.

  5. Try guess it =) (Hint: It is located in a post-communist country)

Hmm... Firstly, like I said, some people consider autohemotherapy as alternative treatment, so in other countries you can't see doctors or nurse will perform it in the hospitals. Secondly, in this country, rather as alternative treatment, they consider autohemotherapy, physiotherapy, cupping, mustard plaster, application of leech as normal medical procedures or manipulations.
